EXCLUSIVE NEWS

The Kilim Museum, operating under the Van Yüzüncü Yıl University Turkish Handicrafts Application and Research Center, offers a visual feast to the museum visitors with approximately 500 rugs, most of which belong to the Van-Hakkari region.

Van Yüzüncü Yıl University Turkish Handicrafts Application and Research Center and Kilim Museum were established on January 7, 1990. This center continues its production activities in order to keep this tradition alive, as well as unearthing old carpets and kilims since its establishment. In addition to rugs from the Van-Hakkari region, where approximately 500 rugs are exhibited, old Persian carpets, Hereke carpets and rugs from many regions of Anatolia are displayed in the museum. While most of these carpets and kilims are brought to the museum through external grants, the rest are woven in workshops within the museum.

Van Yüzüncü Yıl University Turkish Handicrafts Application and Research Center Director Nazan Oskay said that there are carpets and rugs from many regions in the museum. This gives our visitors the opportunity to see products in the same collection that they can see in several different regions.”

There are three workshops in total, two of which are rug weaving workshops and one is a mohair weaving workshop. The motifs of the rugs woven in the workshops are taken from the original without any deformation. The threads used in kilims are obtained from wool threads, which are all dyed with madder. The weaving time of a rug is determined by yarn, motif and size options. The weaving time of a fine yarn carpet with dimensions of two square meters reaches 3 months. At the same time, these workshops also make special production by taking orders.

This museum, which plays a major role in keeping the traditional culture alive, wants visitors, private organizations and the state to support them in keeping this value alive. Kilim Museum welcomes its visitors five days a week during working hours.
